Statistics from 2008 to 2016 shows that there are currently 700 red-shanked douc langurs at Son Tra Peninsula (Danang), a significant increase from previous years.
13th of February, Danang Department of Forest Protection announced that their cooperation with Douc Langur Foundation on investigating langurs from 2008 to 2016 has revealed a total number of 700 red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus) at Son Tra Peninsula, with all generations in a family.
The number has increased significately by hundreds as compared to previous years. This is good news in the battle against illegal hunting and trafficking of wild animals, which pushed the langurs and many other species to the edge of extinction.
According to Danang Department of Forest Protection, for the last 9 years, they have intervened in time to protect 21 red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus) in the areas of Hoa Bac, Hoa Phu, Hoa Ninh, Hoa Phong, Hoa Nhon and Hoa Hiep Bac of Danang and release them into Son Tra Natural Reserve.
Danang Department of Forest Protection has stressed that red-shanked douc is highly endangered species and every act of hunting, killing, capturing, trafficking is prohibited. Offenders will be convicted with a fine of up to 2 billion VND and the highest sentence of 15 years.
Red-shanked douc has been chosen by Danang authorities as the mascot of the city at APEC 2017.
