Day 7 of SOM 3 and Related Meetings

Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, 24 August 2017 – SOM3 and Related Meetings continued with 12 activities of the Health Working Group (HWG), Intellectual Property Experts’ Group (IPEG), Economic Committee (EC), Chemical Dialogue (CD), Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC), Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI), Business Mobility Group (BMG), and SOM Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (SCE).

The 7th APEC High-level Meeting on Health and the Economy continued its second working day. Various issues were brought to the general sessions namely: Tackling Health System Inefficiencies to Boost Resources; Making Best Investments in Adolescent Health and Well-being; Public – Private Partnerships and Multi – Sectorial Collaborations for a healthy Asia Pacific 2020. The outcomes of the Meeting will be incorporated in a joint statement and recommendations to be submitted to APEC Ministers and Economic Leaders in November this year.

In the afternoon, the Policy Dialogue on HPV and Cervical Cancer and the Cervical Cancer Experts’ Group Workshop were hosted by HWG. Vietnamese Vice Minister of Health, H.E. Nguyen Viet Tien attended both meetings. Delegates shared information on the situation of cervical cancer in their respective economies as well practices of combating HPV spreading and cervical cancer.

Today, SOM Steering Committee on ECOTECH (SCE) had the Policy Dialogue on Bridging Gap in Economic Development and Integration of Remote Areas for Sustainable Growth in the APEC Region, while a Workshop on Simplified Business Registration and Incorporation for APEC was held in the framework of the Economic Committee (EC).

The Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC) continued its work, focusing on proposals to support other APEC’s committees, sub-committees and working groups through the Boracay Action Agenda. Participants also discussed policies to enhance members’ services standards and to strengthen standards and conformance infrastructure to facilitate SMEs’ development.

The Intellectual Property Rights Experts Group (IPEG) held a Workshop on Trademark Infringement Determinations in a Border Enforcement Context. Delegates discussed the impacts of trademark infringement on brand owners, consumers, and economies, and shared experiences in detecting fake products and appraising brands that are easily faked. They also agreed on the development of a framework to improve the efficiency of cooperation among customs, trademark offices and the private sector.

Chemical Dialogue (CD)’s plenary meeting took place today. Several initiatives to support the multilateral trade system and the WTO; fostering regional economic integration; enhancing connectivity and trade facilitation as well as promoting innovative and inclusive development were brought to the table.

Today is also one of the busiest days of the Trade and Investment Committee (CTI) with three activities taking place simultaneously, namely Conference on Advertising Standards, FotC on Trade Facilitation Meeting, and FotC on FTAAP Meeting. In the meanwhile, the Business Mobility Group (BMG) started its plenary session. The future of travel facilitation and business mobility in the region were raised, among other issues.
