Since its liberation on 29 March 1975, Da Nang has seen impressive growth in its tourism sector. Local tourism has seen particularly significant changes since Da Nang was recognised as a centrally governed city in 1997, when the city had just 58 hotels, including several 3-star hotels, offering 1,948 rooms in total.

The city’s tourism sector grew significantly between 1997 and 2008, and especially after it was identified as one of the city’s spearhead economic sectors in 2003. During that period, the former Pham Van Dong Beach Park, now known as East Sea Park, the My Khe and T18 bathing areas, and the infrastructure on the Son Tra Peninsula were developed. The number of Thai tourists arriving in the city by road reached between 20,000 and 30,000 per year at that time.

Since 2008, local tourism has seen numerous remarkable achievements and there has been a boom in the number of seaside hotels and resorts. This has helped to meet the diversified demands of visitors, including those who are on business trips to attend either conferences or seminars. The city is now famous for its luxury resorts such as InterContinental, Pullman, Furama, Fusion Maia, Hyatt Regency and Vinpearl Luxury.

Over recent years, from 2011 until now, a number of large tourism projects have been officially opened including the Ba Na Hills Resort and its world-class Fantasy Park, the Sun Wheel and Asia Park development, and the Helio Centre entertainment complex.

The city’s resorts and hotels have consolidated their own brand names, which has helped to further the development of the local tourism sector. In particular, the 5-star InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort (InterCon) recently won the ‘World’s Leading Luxury Resort’ award at the World Travel Awards Grand Final held in Anguilla on 7 December.

In addition, the city was listed among the top 10 most attractive destinations in Asia in 2014 by the readers of Smart Travel Asia, the leading regional online travel magazine. It also takes top spot in the online travel review site TripAdvisor’s ‘Destinations on the Rise in 2015’ list.

In order to further the development of the local tourism sector, a focus will be on developing Da Nang into a must-visit place for visitors arriving in the central region and highlands. Special attention will be paid to promoting the opening of new international flight routes to Da Nang from Japan, South Korea, China, Thailand and Singapore, with a priority being some from European countries.

Importance will also be attached to making Da Nang one of Viet Nam’s most attractive ports for international cruise ships. The emphasis will be on cooperating with other localities in the central region to develop their own special tourism products, and to advertise their tourism images to international friends. Heed will also be paid to making Da Nang a city of events, ending harassment of tourists, and ensuring a safe and friendly tourism environment.
