19 February 2017, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Viet Nam – The second day of APEC 2017 SOM 1 and related meetings continued today with activities under 10 fora , namely the Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG), Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG), Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (CTWG), Business Mobility Group (BMG), Chemical Dialogue (CD), Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT), Intellectual Property Rights Experts Group (IPEG), Life Sciences Innovation Forum (LSIF), Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI) and Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC).
The EPWG, IPEG, PPSTI and CD concluded with progress in many areas. Member economies agreed on susbstantive work in preparation for the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Response to Climate Change – a Ministerial-level Meeting to be held in Can Tho City this August. Other topics discussed during the meetings were strategies to meet intellectual property needs of micro, small and medium size enterprises (MSMEs); disaster risk reduction using science and technology; cooperation between industry and governments to improve chemical product stewardship and safe use; and science capacity and enabling environment for innovation, to name a few.
At the HRDWG, ACTWG, EGILAT meetings, delegates agreed on priorities of work in 2017, and continued discussion on important matters that promote APEC cooperation in the areas of movement of labour; promoting social engagement in anti-corruption; legal trade on wood products, etc…. BMG today focused on bilateral meetings between its members.
Meanwhile, the SCSC started its first activity of 2017 today with the Specialist Regional Bodies Meeting, while LSIF held the meeting of the Regulatory Harmonization Steering Committee.
Alongside with formal meetings, many APEC delegates also took part in a technical tour to Suoi Dau lake this afternoon, where they also had an opportunity to enjoy the landscape of Khanh Hoa
With a total of 10 meetings, today is one of the busiest day during SOM 1 hosted in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa from 18/02 to 03/3.
