The Da Nang Heroes and Martyrs Memorial, a unique and solemn tribute to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the nation’s great struggles, stands as a beacon of the city’s profound cultural and historical significance. This site is a must-visit for tourists eager to explore the region’s rich heritage.

THE MEMORIAL TO HONOR THE SACRIFICES OF PREVIOUS GENERATIONS

Vietnam’s history is deeply intertwined with the tireless efforts to construct and protect the nation, with many individuals selflessly giving their lives. In Da Nang, a city renowned for its heroic legacy, 27 cemeteries and memorials, including the Da Nang Heroes and Martyrs Memorial, act as poignant reminders of this sacrifice. Locals often refer to this memorial as the 2-9 Memorial.

For those visiting Da Nang, the Da Nang Heroes and Martyrs Memorial, also known as the City Heroes and Martyrs Memorial, is a pivotal part of the city’s history and culture. Its remarkable architectural design and profound sense of humanity provide a space for Vietnamese visitors to pay their respects and express their gratitude for those who came before.

Situated in a prime location with the serene Han River flowing in the background, the monument was designed through the combined vision of architect Pham Sy Chuc, sculptor Pham Van Hang, and the late artist-sculptor Do Toan. The innovative design reflects not only in its shape but also in the integrated functionality of its base. It includes a sacred space for incense offerings, wreaths, and memorials for the fallen heroes. The words “Tổ quốc ghi công” (The National Citation) are engraved prominently along this Memorial’s shaft, adding a sense of grandeur and deeply honoring those who sacrificed for Vietnam’s independence.

Moreover, the restoration and expansion project of the memorial and March 29 Square, inaugurated by the People’s Committee of Da Nang in August 2024, is a powerful testament to the city’s gratitude and respect for its fallen heroes. The project, which commenced in 2022 and was executed in two phases, underscores the residents’ and officials’ unwavering commitment to honor and acknowledge the sacrifices made for the city’s defense, construction, and protection.
