About:

Cam Ne Mat Village, which is 14 km to the south-west of Da Nang, belongs to Hoa Tien Commune, Hoa Vang District. Cam Ne mats were used in the royal palaces of the Nguyen Dynasty, and the artists from Cam Ne Village were honoured and rewarded by the kings.

What to explore:

Cam Ne weavers don’t apply flower pattern onto the background after weaving white mats like some others villages, but they choose rush fibers to dye them with many colors according to the owner. Red, blue, green, yellow… The colored substances are cooked then they dip the fibers into it and dry them. A handful of rushes can be dyed once or twice depending on the colors and the mixing. After being dried, the colored rush fibers are used to make flower mats.

A difficult job of mat weaving is to select the tree to make reed and shuttle. You have to choose trees which are straight, lightweight and strong. At Cam Ne, they often use the old palm tree to make the reed and shuttle.

Their products are sold by wholesale through the village. Prices vary depending on the size. Cam Ne mats have the advantages of thicker and stronger edges, it’s softer while lying down than others local mats. To preserve and promote the Cam Ne traditional mats weaving, local people help each other by sharing experiences, providing capital; and especially their products must have a good reputation for design, quality and efficient use to exist and develop.
