OVERVIEW

In 1990, Han market was completely rebuilt with two spacious floors on an area of 3000 m2. Since the market’s architecture is beautiful and airy, and the neat and orderly kiosk layout is based on the categorical allocation of goods, the market is very convenient for shopping. The market has goods from all over the country and continuously receives customers from tour buses. The whole market area can be described as a vibrant shopping scene, maintaining neatness and order with scarce encroachments onto the road.

The Market sells a wide variety of goods including shoes, clothes, bags, fabrics, and souvenirs. Particularly, the market is famous for Vietnamese ao dai, which are hand sewn and can be picked up within an hour. It is also famous for food products, fresh seafood, fruits, fish sauce and local dried foods, which are typical of Da Nang, as well as the Central Region in general. Coming to the market, customers and tourists can be assured of food safety and civilized commerce. Moreover, people are able to not only shop and get the products they like, but also communicate, interact and experience the local daily life which retains the historical and cultural characteristics of the city by the Han River.

HISTORY

“Thien Nam Tu Chi Lo Do Thu” (天南四至路圖), the Route Map of the Four Directions of Thien Nam made in the 17th century, clearly described the route from Hai Van Pass to Quang Nam province as: “Eat at Hai Van Mountain, stay in Chan Dang, eat at Han Quang Market (Han Market), stay in Tu Cu, eat at Hoi An storehouse”. Besides, the stele of Long Thu Pagoda carved by Mr. Le Gia Phuoc from Hai Chau Commune in 1657 stated that the Hai Chau Commune came into existence at the same time as the Han Market. In the early 19th century, the “Hoang Viet nhat thong du dia chi” (皇越一統輿地志), the Hoang Viet Unified Geography, mentioned Hai Chau Market (Han Market), which was situated by the Han River bank to its east.

However, until Da Nang became a French concession at the end of the 19th century, the Market was solidly built by the French with market stalls and kiosks run by small merchants. Goods traded in the Market during the French colonial period were divided into two sections: the Han Market Street Stalls and the Han Market Interior. The market street stalls were along the two sides of the Han Market building, specializing in buying and selling consumer products or food on a large scale, which had many independent shops and stores of the Chinese and a few of the Vietnamese. Besides, the French also built the Tourane Marché transit train station (Han Market Station) to transport goods to the main station of the city.
