The Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery

0 9

The Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery contains more than 1,500 graves of soldiers and civilians from Quang Nam—Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Binh Tri Thien, and Binh Dinh—who fought on the Da Nang front and made the ultimate sacrifice during the resistance against the French invasion.

This location is a testament to our people’s unwavering and resilient spirit who bravely opposed the formidable Western invaders armed with modern weaponry and ambitions.

Established in 1876, the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery serves as the final resting place for those who gave their lives during the French assaults on Da Nang from 1858 to 1860, with more than 1,500 graves. Noteworthy cemetery features include a precious black marble stele and the graves of two generals, Nguyen Viet Thu and Nguyen Thuong Chat. These graves were relocated to the Hoa Vang Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Son Ga Cemetery (Hoa Khuong commune, Hoa Vang district) due to urban development.

The historical monument of the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery is an authentic artifact, embodying exceptional historical and cultural significance beyond that of an ordinary stele. It also serves as a profound literary document.

The city has invested in the restoration and construction of the Nam Duong Ward Cultural Center and has opened the park to visitors who wish to pay respects and visit this historically significant site, which holds national recognition.

Recently, the Nam Duong Ward People’s Committee announced the installation of 4 QR-Codes for people and tourists to read the content of the steles at the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery in Sino-Vietnamese, Vietnamese, and English. This enhances the work of educating the heroic and indomitable tradition of our ancestors for present generations.

The Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery has been renovated, greenery has been planted, and exercise equipment has been arranged to create recreational space for the residents.

Decision No. 1288-BH/QD classified the historical and cultural monument of the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery as a national heritage site on November 16, 1988.
