Da Nang, May 19, 2026– Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation Joint Stock Company (AHT) today held the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Da Nang International Passenger Terminal (Terminal T2). With a total investment of approximately VND 1,500 billion, the project is designed to further enhance passenger experience through nature-inspired architecture, integrating resort-style environments and local cultural elements throughout the terminal.

Originally launched in 2015, Terminal T2 was completed within 18 months and commenced operations on May 19th, 2017, in time to successfully serve the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017. Building on this foundation, the terminal has since established itself as a benchmark in Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure development, and remains the only terminal in the country to be awarded the Skytrax 5-Star Airport Terminal rating for three consecutive years (2024–2026).
The expansion underscores AHT’s continued commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and culturally distinctive terminal, reflecting both international standards and the renowned hospitality of Central Vietnam.

Responding to sustained traffic growth
The expansion decision follows sustained growth in passenger traffic. In 2019, Terminal T2 handled more than 7.1 million passengers, exceeding its design capacity of 4 million by 79%. More recently, passenger volumes remained consistently high, reaching 6.18 million in 2024 and 6.81 million in 2025.
In response to increasing operational demands, the expansion of the International Passenger Terminal is not only an urgent solution to enhance passenger capacity and ensure safe operations, but also an important step in AHT’s long-term vision to develop an international airport service ecosystem while maintaining its prestigious 5-Star Skytrax standard.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the T2 Expansion Project also marks the first step in realizing the strategic planning vision of developing two international airports within one city – Da Nang International Airport and Chu Lai Airport for the period to 2030, with a vision toward 2050. Under this plan, by 2030, Da Nang will operate two modern international airports with a combined design capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
This development is expected to create new growth opportunities, further strengthen the tourism and service sectors, and contribute significantly to the economic development of Da Nang and the South Central Coast region. At the same time, it will support the city’s goal of achieving sustained double-digit economic growth, while positioning Da Nang and Central Vietnam as a major international gateway and a dynamic aviation hub in Asia.

Architectural continuity with the Seagull concept
A defining feature of the project is its architectural approach. Rather than developing a standalone structure, the expansion is designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing terminal, based on the “Seagull Wings” concept.
The roof structure of the new expansion mirrors the form of the existing terminal, creating a unified visual identity resembling a flock of seagulls in flight. This ensures architectural consistency while improving passenger flow and operational efficiency.
Internally, the terminal adopts a biophilic design approach, incorporating natural light, greenery, and optimized ventilation systems to create a calming, restorative environment for passengers.

Capacity expansion and technology upgrades
The project covers an additional area of 3,600 square meters, bringing the total footprint to approximately 21,085 square meters upon completion. The check-in area will be significantly expanded, increasing the number of counters from 54 to 85.
Aircraft boarding capacity will also be enhanced, with the number of aerobridges increasing from 4 to 7, thereby reducing reliance on bus transfers during adverse weather conditions.
In parallel, the project includes the installation of a next-generation baggage handling system (BHS), featuring four outbound baggage islands and six arrival carousels. The air conditioning system will utilize inverter technology and Variable Air Volume (VAV) control to improve energy efficiency and maintain optimal indoor climate conditions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Do Trong Hau, Deputy General Director of AHT, stated:
“The expansion of Terminal T2 represents not only a solution to current capacity constraints, but also a clear demonstration of AHT’s long-term commitment to supporting the socio-economic development of Da Nang. As an operator of a 5-star terminal, we are committed to delivering this project on schedule and to the highest standards, creating an airport environment that is modern, safe, and reflective of local cultural identity and hospitality.”
The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in the 2026–2030 period, increasing the terminal’s total design capacity to 6 million passengers per annum.
