OVERVIEW

This impressive structure features a three-story central design facing the Han River, masterfully crafted by a French architect in the elegant Neoclassical style. Construction began in 1898, and by 1900, it was inaugurated. The 1960s saw the addition of two three-story wings on either side, expertly maintaining the architectural harmony of the original design.

Initially, this building served as the headquarters for successive Tourane Governors, earning the name Governor’s Palace (Tòa Đốc Lý). In July 1945, it transitioned to the office of the Mayor of Tourane, appointed by the Tran Trong Kim Government. On August 26, 1945, it became the headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary People’s Committee of Thanh Thai Phien. After the French reoccupation in early 1947, it returned to its role as the Tourane Governor’s Palace until January 3, 1950, when France officially transferred the Tourane concession to the Government of the State of Vietnam. From that point onward, the Governor’s Palace was renamed Da Nang City Hall (Tòa Thị Chính Đà Nẵng).

Following the liberation of Da Nang on March 29, 1975, the City Hall became the administrative center for the revolutionary government, overseeing the Quang Da Special Zone, Quang Nam – Da Nang Province, and later, Da Nang City. Plans to transform this historic building into the new Da Nang Museum have been in place since late 2016.

The Da Nang Museum represents a major cultural initiative with state-of-the-art scientific, aesthetic, and exhibition facilities. It showcases nearly 3,000 carefully selected artifacts from 27,000 historical items, merging traditional exhibits with cutting-edge multimedia technologies. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience:

– 3D Mapping and interactive 3D Mapping films; 3D movies and documentary films; Digital slideshows and interactive exhibits. With these engaging and immersive displays, the Da Nang Museum offers an enlightening exploration into the city’s natural, social, and historical fabric, highlighting its rich cultural heritage and aspirations as a leading socio-economic hub in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

EXHIBITION SPACE AND THEMATIC GALLERIES

The museum boasts three expertly curated exhibition floors featuring thematic displays of images, documents, and artifacts across nine key themes, including: – Overview of Da Nang – A Photographic Wall – Nature and People of Da Nang – History of Da Nang’s Urban Development – The Struggle for National Independence – War Remnants and Testimonies – Da Nang’s Integration and Development – Cultural Diversity – The Da Nang City Hall – A Historical Landmark – Antique Collections of Da Nang Museum

Located at the prime intersection of three major streets – Bach Dang, Quang Trung, and Tran Phu – the museum connects seamlessly to cultural and festival hubs, including the Thành Điện Hải Square Project, the General Science Library, and the western waterfront of the Han River. As a vibrant bridge between the past and present, the Da Nang Museum is poised to become a prominent architectural and cultural highlight, embodying the city’s rich historical and cultural essence along the banks of the Han River.
