VIETNAMESE BAMBOO CIRCUS
In Vietnamese culture in particular, and Asian culture in general, bamboo and circus both symbolize simplicity imbued with the breath of the countryside. However, that familiarity and simplicity do not mean monotony or ordinariness. The art of the Vietnamese Bamboo Circus skillfully blends these two elements to create spectacular and captivating performances, offering audiences unforgettable experiences.
Throughout the performances of the Vietnamese Bamboo Circus, artists use bamboo to create innovative and visually stunning acts. The Vietnamese Bamboo Circus delicately combines elements that may seem contrasting yet blend harmoniously: the sturdiness of bamboo alongside the graceful movements of the human body, and the stillness of the setting juxtaposed with the vibrant, energetic atmosphere of the circus.
Music in the Vietnamese Bamboo Circus is performed live, creating a vibrant soundscape for each performance. The sounds rise with excitement or soften with depth, following the emotions of the performers. At times, the music even transcends its role as mere accompaniment to become a character in the story itself.
The instruments used in the Vietnamese Bamboo Circus are deeply rooted in national cultural identity: from the Central Highlands’ gongs, the dan day in Northern ca tru, to the dan co in the familiar Southern don ca tai tu. These musical forms have all been recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
INTRODUCTION TO TEH DAR
If My Village is a tranquil portrait of a Northern Vietnamese countryside, and À Ố Show is a rustic symphony of rural life infused with the youthful rhythms of urban culture, then Teh Dar is the powerful embodiment of Central Highlands culture on stage—immersing audiences in a mystical world of elephant hunts, moonlit rendezvous, and ancient forests whispering of death and rebirth.
Teh Dar has toured many countries around the world and proudly captivates both Vietnamese and international audiences with its unique storytelling and artistry. The performance enchants viewers with an inspiring fusion of bamboo circus, daring acrobatics, dance, and juggling, all set to live indigenous music.
“Teh Dar” means “going in circles” in the K’Ho language, symbolizing the preservation of Vietnam’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, as the artists continuously inspire the circle of life within tribal communities and encourage the ongoing growth of cultures.
