SOM 3 and Related Meetings kicked off with 10 meetings

18 August 2017, Ho Chi Minh City – Earlier today, the first series of meetings of SOM 3 and related meetings were held in Ho Chi Minh City. APEC delegation participated in 10 meetings of various APEC committees and working groups, including: the Sub-Committee on Customs Procedures (SCCP), Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACT-Net), Counter-Terrorism Working Group (CTWG), Life Science Innovation Forum (LSIF), Transportation Working Group (TPTWG), APEC Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT) and the Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC).

At the SCSC’s Workshop on Best Practices Sharing of Standards and Conformity Assessment Implementation on Smart Cities in APEC Region, delegates discussed ways to improve and promote the standards application & conformity assessment of products, services and management systems related to the sustainable development of smart cities in the APEC region. Participants also shared best practices and experiences in developing smart cities effectively and standards development on smart cities from the leading international organizations.

The SCSC also held a Workshop on Facilitating Trade in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Products through Encouragement of Electronic Labeling Best Practices. The Workshop aims at helping APEC economies move toward achieving consistency in e-labeling, reducing barriers to trade and business costs for traded consumer ICT products; hence supporting APEC’s goals of streamlining regulatory progress and promoting regional integration. In 2012, Asia Pacific exports of ICT products were valued at $1.4 trillion, nearly 60 percent of ICT exports globally.

The ACT-NET today held a Workshop on Enhancing Cooperation among Law Enforcement Authorities for Asset Recovery. The Workshop provides a platform for  APEC officials and experts from non-member economies as well as international organization to share their views and exchange their expertise in order to enhance the capacity of the participants in various approaches in asset recovery. It also helped to increase the capacity of law enforcement officials in this area and build a more efficient cross-border anti-corruption cooperation. The outcomes of the workshop contribute to support the APEC Strategy for Strengthening Quality Growth.

The TPTWG organized two activities today, namely Workshop on Promoting Policies, Regulation and Flexibility to Improve Resilience of Supply Chains and 10th APEC Port Services Network (APSN) Meeting. The Asia – Pacific region accounts for 70% of world’s natural disasters. Enhancing resilience for supply chains is therefore one of the top priorities of economies in the region.

At the meeting of the CTWG, delegates continued to review the implementation of the 2013 – 2017 Strategic Plan and discussed the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan. Delegates also listened to report on the results of the Workshop on Strengthening Resilience of Tourism Business in the Impact of Terrorist Attacks this May in Indonesia.

The LSIF organized the first SOM 3 event with the Regulation Harmonizing Steering Committee (RHSC) meeting. At the meeting, delegates discussed Roadmaps of Multi-regional Clinical Trials and Good Clinical Practices Inspection, Global Supply Chain Integrity, Biotechnological Products, Good Registration Management…

The EGILAT held a Workshop on Customs Best Practices to Identify Illegal Timber and Wood Products. EGILAT, established in 2011, is one of the newest working groups of APEC, with the aim of promoting trade in legally harvested timber products, anti-logging, illegal logging and members’ capacity building. The results of the workshop will be reported at the plenary meeting of the group on August 20-21. In addition, the AD and SCCP also held their first meetings at SOM 3.

SOM 3 and related meetings will continue to take place until 30 August.
