The Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on APEC Toward 2020 and Beyond took place today, 16 May 2017, at the National Convention Center in Ha Noi. H.E. Tran Dai Quang, President of Viet Nam delivered a keynote address at the event.

The Dialogue, co-hosted by Viet Nam and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), was an initiative to implement APEC Leaders’decision at their Meeting in Lima in November 2016 to start “a series of high-level dialogues on APEC Toward 2020 and Beyond”, and to harness inputs of APEC member economies, stakeholders and international institutions on ways to advance progress toward the Bogor Goals and develop APEC’s post-2020 vision.

More than 300 participants including APEC Senior Officials, government officials, business leaders, the academia, social organizations and the media from 21 member economies, as well as international and regional institutions, such as the World Economic Forum, United Nations Development Program, etc.  attended the Dialogue.

Among invited guests and keynote speakers were Former Vietnamese Deputy Minister Vu Khoan, Chairman of the APEC 2006 National Committee; Former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy; Former Indonesian Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu; Former Thai Minister of Energy Narongchai Akrasanee…

In his keynote address, President Tran Dai Quang affirmed “More than ever, now is the time for APEC economies to send a strong message affirming their continued commitment to open markets, deepened regional economic integration, and support for a new, more advanced process of globalization.”

The President stressed that “The key to APEC’s success today is to place people and businesses at the center of development. We need to promote sustainable, inclusive and innovative growth, allowing all segments of society to participate in and enjoy the fruits of development and shared prosperity.”

The President reiterated the importance of APEC economies jointly developing a more sustainable growth model, saying that growth will not be sustainable unless it is economically, financially, or socially inclusive.

Sharing his thought on the future of APEC, the President said “Over the next two to three decades, APEC will need to showcase its vitality, dynamism, resilience and relevance. APEC needs to assume its global leadership role in addressing regional and global challenges, particularly climate change, aging population, income inequality, natural hazards including disasters and epidemics…”

“The record of the past three decades testifies to APEC’s responsiveness and resilience. Over the next two or three decades, APEC needs to assume its global leadership role and play on its strength as a voluntary, flexible cooperation forum,” concluded the President.

With two plenary sessions under the theme of “APEC in a fast changing world” and “Toward a post-2020 vision for APEC” and five focus discussion groups, participants had interactive and fruitful deliberations on the following issues: How can APEC speed up efforts to achieve the Bogor Goals? What is the timeframe of a post-2020 vision for APEC? What can be goals, pillars of cooperation and role of APEC beyond 2020? How can stakeholders contribute to developing such a vision? What are the next steps to shape that vision?

The outcomes from the Dialogue will be reported to APEC Senior Officials for discussion and consideration at the SOM 2 Meeting on 17 – 18 May 2017.
